Pros: ASUS has a pretty great UEFI BIOS Interface which lets you configure overclock settings and XMP profiles very easily. Seemed to handle everything I threw at it pretty well while it was at 100%. Cons: Poor performance from the onboard audio with some applications producing pops, static, and desync audio in the beginning with Windows 10 (this may be fixed now by drivers).

Apparent poor memory support (see 'Other' section for details) from the Z170 chipset. Other Thoughts: Bought in April 2016. Had some strange issues with the onboard audio desyncing and stuttering (specifically with X-Com: Enemy Unknown) in Windows 10. I should note that with Windows 7 I did not have this issue - it appeared after the free upgrade to Win 10. I tried updating/reinstalling drivers, but in the end i bought a PCI-e sound card. That held me over for almost 2 years, but suddenly a few weeks ago the whole system started freezing randomly while playing a game.

I removed and reseated all the components and ultimately isolated the issue to the memory - whenever it would try to boot with two DIMMs (even on default settings) the system would eventually hang, and often not even boot. The recommended configurations in the manual produced an error code 55, which is undetected or incompatible memory. The memory came with a Newegg combo (Newegg warns you those aren't 100% guaranteed), and it actually worked for months so the sudden failure was a surprise.

Investigating the error lead me to find that memory manufacturers and motherboard manufacturers keep different QVL lists. G.Skill asserts their memory will work with the board through a very short QVL list, while the ASUS CPU/Memory Support QVL does not seem to include the memory that came with my combo (F4-2400C15D-16GVR). After reading a half dozen stories similar to mine with other Z170 boards, I limped along with a single 8GB module until I decided on a replacement motherboard. I am sure ASUS would replace this for me under warranty, but I would rather not do the dance of trying different RAM configs and just move on to something I can trust to work.

In the end I bought a TUF Z270 Mk 2, and it was able to boot with the same memory and CPU (6600k) without issue. I don't hold it against ASUS or Newegg as this seems to be an issue with a lot of Z170 boards, but I don't recommend this motherboard.

Some folks do upgrade about every two years, but I try to keep them a little longer. One final note for those that are interested in the whole story - the computer this board was driving sat powered off in my house for about a month because we were forced out by Hurricane Irma. There was no water damage to the side of the house where the computer resided, but several trees fell in a single spot and destroyed our kitchen so we had to leave for a month while the trees were removed and that side of the house reframed and reshingled. During that time the UPS it was connected to was unplugged and turned off. Obviously this could have played a role so I wanted to include it in my review, but in my mind a motherboard should be able to be turned off for a few weeks and turn back on without forgetting how to manage its memory.

Pros: It works. Good power delivery.

Tons of overclocking options. (7) 4 pin fan headers that are well placed. Not really missing any features that I need. Seems to be solid build quality, heavy, no flexing. Lots of ROG software if you want it.

Edit - Still working great after 1 year. Cons: BIOS/UEFI is still a little glitchy. Qfan freezes when I try to run auto fan optimization.

So, I just set fan profiles manually. Other Thoughts: Wish I could use Fan Xpert3 as a stand alone program. Don't want to use AI Suite. Bios Qfan control is almost as good. Flashed Bios 1504. CPU - 6600K 4.7ghz 1.35v GPU - GTX 780 RAM - 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400. Pros: - Looks good - Nice features - Nice I/O shield - Post codes are awesome Cons: - Needs to be updated for Kaby Lake - Flashback doesn't work (for me at least) - Had a small dent in the heatsink ROG logo in the bottom right (probs from shipping, doesn't bother me enough to return it) Other Thoughts: This board is pretty dang great.

Had an issue installing a G4560 (temporary), and updating the bios was a huge 2 hour hassle for me. I could be using the flashback tool wrong, but I tried 2 usb sticks and every single friggin port with both NTFS and FAT32 file systems, so I think it was just the board. Ended up booting with a 6600K to update the bios and switch back to the G4560. Personally, I think the bios flashback stuff needs to be better documented in the manual. It just sort of says to rename the file to something, then use the bios flashback utility.

No specific file system, no mention of what port to put it in, not even how to initiate flashback or the friggin error codes associated with the installing the update!!! Like wow was it annoying.

Please add Bios Flashback usage to your manuals, ASUS, it saves end users time. Otherwise great board!

5/5 because after all is said and done it's a great board with a meh manual. The following guidelines apply to all product categories unless otherwise indicated within specific categories.
