SAP ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise), originally known as Sybase SQL Server, and also commonly known as Sybase DB or ASE, is a relational model database server. There shouldn't be problems using the newer Visual Studios to build the applications. Make sure you check documentation to keep the runtimes up-to-date for running applications. ASE ADO.NET Provider 4.0 is built under Visual Studio 2010 (for 4.0.net framework) and might even be built. Family 8203+01 IBM Power Systems Server Model E4A IBM United States Sales Manual Revised: October 24, 2017.

Synopsis: My aim is end suffering for newbies getting started with Sybase ASE, especially folks who have come back from a Sybase training course or wishing to explore Sybase ASE without the hassle of setting things up. I'm going to set things up using VirtualBox. So before making a start, download the latest. I will have full instructions of any successful set-ups together with a VirtualBox VM so that you can get started straight away and start exploring the Sybase ASE Platform.

If you have any comments, or any particular features you want me to set-up, write comments below. Issues: When the installation process sets up and starts the master and backup server, it says the master server has failed.

The backup server seems to start, but then some Java exception happens. Going into /opt/sybase, running the SYBASE.sh script, and then running showserver reveals the backup server is running, and the master is not. This is verified by checking the master log file in $SYBASE/$SYBASEASE/install.

Fingers crossed the master ASE server will just work by setting it up manually, which is a real pain. Update: Well five months later, here it is, I've exported a VirtualBox VM with Sybase ASE 15.7 installed and ready to use. I have added some login details below, but they are described in the Virtual Machine as well. This all works well in VirtualBox version 4.1.14 which can be downloaded. Once VirtualBox is installed, you will then need to import the virtual machine. One day I'll supply better instructions, but hopefully for those who ofay with Virtual Machines will find this a breeze.

Do let me know how you get on, problems, requests, comments, dislikes, etc. Comment Box below.

SyBaseVM v0.5. Instructions: Pre-requisites: A 64-bit architecture computer system and some patience. Step 1: Download SybaseVM v0.5 and place the file in a place you'll remember. Step 2: Download VirtualBox, preferably 4.1.14 or later, and make sure it is installed on your system.

Step 3: Open VirtualBox. On the top menu bar, click File-Import Appliance. Step 4: Click on the 'Choose.'

Select the Virtual Machine file you downloaded earlier. Step 5: You should now see a 'Appliance Import Settings' page. Check the configuration, particularly the ones that are check boxed, such as DVD, USB Controller, Sound Card, Network Adapter. You might want to enable/disable those features from the VM. The VM should work with or without the features checked.

There is also a check box option to: 'Reinitialize the MAC address of all network cards.' On the first time importing this VM, you can leave this UNCHECKED. However if you import this same VM into VIrtualBox, alongside previous imports, then for successive imports, it's best to CHECK this option. Read Step 6: Click import. Step 7: The VM titled 'CentOS 64-Bit' will appear. Click Once on 'CentOS 64-Bit' and then press the 'Start' at the top.

Wait for the VM to boot up. Step 8: You should now see a CentOS login screen. Click on 'papaya', and in the Password box, type: 'papaya' (without the single quotes). Step 9: At this point, you may want to view the VM in a full screen. Press Ctrl + F to do so.

Otherwise you can continue as normal. Step 10: Open a Terminal. Step 11: Change to root by typing the following: su root (password is: enter1) Step 12: Type cd /opt/sybase Step 13: Now you need to run SYBASE.sh - we need this so we setup all the aliases (i.e $SYBASE, $SYBASEASE, etc). SYBASE.sh (there is a space after the dot) Step 14: Type: cd $SYBASE/$SYBASEASE/install Step 15: Type: startserver -f RUNPAPAYA (there will be loads of log information appear, wait until no more text appears on the screen, that will mean the startserver is set up) Step 16: Type: isql -Usa -P -SPAPAYA and you should see a prompt looking like this: 1 Step 17: Complete. Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back. You can run the backup server too in another terminal. See if you can work it out:-) Note: You will have noticed, this is a crude setup, for example, we shouldn't really be root when running isql, and the aliases should just work in any terminal.

You're welcome to fix that, but in my next version 0.6, I'll get these things fixed. Hope you learned something.

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - Sybase, Inc., a SAP® company (NYSE: ) and industry leader in enterprise and mobile software, today announced the general availability of Sybase® Adaptive Server Enterprise® (ASE) 15.7. Sybase ASE 15.7 provides a cost-efficient relational database management system (RDBMS) for managing very large data sets for the most demanding applications. ASE 15.7, with its new advanced compression capabilities, allows large data volumes to be stored more compactly and reduces I/O times, enabling today's top enterprises to handle more transactions and support more concurrent users without adding the cost of more disks and hardware.

Today's announcement was made at Sybase, collocated with and being held in, from September 12-16. (Logo: ) 'Sybase has made significant enhancements to optimize data storage and increase developer productivity in ASE 15.7,' said Carl Olofson, research vice president, IDC. 'These new features should strengthen ASE's already impressive total cost of ownership.'

The feature-rich Sybase ASE 15.7 release significantly builds on the ASE 15x product line, providing the optimal platform for SAP® Business Suite. As a result, ASE 15.7 not only provides a powerful database platform for SAP customers, but also allows existing Sybase ASE customers to easily adopt the new features and optimizations without the need for a database upgrade. Enterprises require a database system that allows them to easily scale the amount of users and data without breaking the budget, while guaranteeing dependability. ASE 15.7 delivers business critical performance using compression algorithms in the database to expand and contract data automatically. This enables users to use less disk space to store the same amount of data and to retrieve that information from disks as much as four times faster. 'The explosive rate at which enterprise data is increasing is placing additional challenges on database administration requirements,' said Brian Vink, vice president of Database Products at Sybase, an SAP company.

'Customers need a database that remains easy to manage even in the face of continual system growth. The enhancements introduced in ASE 15.7, provide improved performance, increased reliability and reduced cost for managing the large data volumes being seen in today's mission-critical transactional systems.' ASE 15.7 further reduces cost of operations by simplifying administration and enhancing system security, providing a database manager that remains easy to manage while protecting against intrusion. ASE 15.7's online operations and extended diagnostic features increase data availability, optimize the data for application performance and quickly pinpoint bottlenecks to speed performance. Strong password encryption and single login profiles protect the database from unauthorized external access attempts and make it easier to manage large numbers of users.

Enterprise software developers want database management systems that support a wide variety of development strategies and languages to allow them to use the technologies with which they are most comfortable. Sybase ASE 15.7 speeds application development and ensures performance of applications out of the box with support for scripting languages. These new application technologies will make it easier for developers and independent software vendor (ISV) partners to leverage the capabilities in ASE that reduce cost and work in their preferred language directly without losing performance. Partner reactions to ASE 15.7 release have been positive:. 'Red Hat sees data proliferation as an industry trend that forces innovation in order to meet customer demands,' said Gus Robertson, vice president of Business Development at Red Hat. 'With our strong partnership and engineering collaboration, customers can be assured that Sybase ASE runs seamlessly on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.'

. 'In order to keep pace with business demands, organizations require a powerful mission-critical solution that can handle increasing volumes of data without incurring downtime,' said Lorraine Bartlett, vice president, Worldwide Marketing and Strategy, Business Critical Systems, HP. 'HP's mission-critical Converged Infrastructure running Sybase ASE for HP-UX or Linux offers clients an optimal platform for the most demanding data workloads.'

. 'In support of our commitment to Sybase, we continue to offer an unprecedented monitoring solution, ensuring our joint customers' databases run efficiently, consistently and with maximum uptime,' said Bradley Tashenberg, CEO, Bradmark Technologies. 'By making ASE 15.7 an even more robust platform for running SAP ERP, Sybase allows DBAs to focus on more critical tasks while ensuring increased performance benefits.' . 'Industry analysts predict an increase in database market share and adoption of Sybase data management products with SAP's acquisition of Sybase,' said Claudia Fernandez, director of Product Management, Toad Solutions at Quest Software. 'By supporting the latest version of Sybase ASE with our market-leading solution, we expect strong adoption of Toad in the Sybase customer base.'
